The short answer
Use “Export layer” or “Export all” in Vextant to back up Nape Pro settings as JSON. To restore them, use the corresponding “Restore layer” or “Restore all” control.
Vextant is an unofficial tool and is not affiliated with Keychron. It saves settings that Vextant supports, not the firmware itself or a complete device image.
Before you start
- Connect the Nape Pro over USB.
- For the web app, use desktop Chrome or Edge with WebHID support. The Microsoft Store app is also available on Windows.
- Do not disconnect the USB cable or remove power while an export or import is running.
- Export the current settings before making major changes or updating firmware.
Export the settings
- Open the Vextant web app and select “Connect.”
- Select the Nape Pro in the browser device prompt and allow the connection.
- To save one layer, select the target layer and choose “Export layer.”
- To save the full supported configuration, choose “Export all” under “Backup and restore.”
- Keep the downloaded JSON file in a safe location with a name that identifies the backup.
Export all temporarily cycles through every layer to read trackball orientations, then attempts to restore the original layer. If communication is interrupted, that restoration may not complete.
What the file contains
Layer backup
The selected layer's keymap, tap-hold actions, scroll ring assignments, and trackball orientation are included.
Full-device backup
The file contains those settings for every exposed layer, plus the DPI table, active DPI stage, polling rate, combos, and trackball gestures.
The firmware version and serial number are also recorded as reference metadata. A value is null when unavailable. These fields are not written back as settings and are not used to match device identity during import.
Restore the settings
- Connect the Nape Pro and export its current settings as a precaution.
- For a layer file, select the destination layer and choose “Restore layer.”
- For a full-device file, choose “Restore all” under “Backup and restore.”
- Select the saved JSON file, review the confirmation shown by Vextant, and apply it.
- Keep the device connected until Vextant reports completion, then verify important mappings and DPI settings.
Import overwrites the targeted settings. The device protocol does not provide an atomic transaction, so Vextant cannot guarantee a complete restore if the USB connection or power is interrupted.
Frequently asked questions
Does the backup include Nape Pro firmware?
No. Vextant saves supported settings. It does not include the firmware itself or a complete device image.
Can I restore the file to a different Nape Pro?
The serial number stored in an export is not used for device matching. Compatibility with a different device or firmware version is not guaranteed, so back up the destination first and verify its settings after import.
Can I edit the JSON file manually?
That is not recommended. Vextant rejects files with an invalid structure or unsupported values. Keeping the file exactly as exported is safer.
Do the web and Microsoft Store versions create different backups?
No. The Microsoft Store release is the Windows Electron version of Vextant, and both versions use the same settings format.
